The mission of Kent Price Wines is to produce limited quantities of high quality wines that capture the character of special sites and the nuance of each growing season. Cabernet Sauvignon and the historic Rutherford vineyard uncovered by Rudy and Kent for Kent Price Cabernet Sauvignon Pulse remains the marquis selection in our portfolio. Yet with the rapidly expanding market and a new wine drinkers coming on board every day we were motivated to broaden our scope by including a select series of wines emulating the model created and preserved of the southern Rhone Valley with a California twist.

The decision was made during the 2011 vintage to source fruit from specific blocks in the vineyard surrounding our state-of-the-art winery poached high in the eastern hills of Napa Valley and overlooking Pritchard Hill. From these blocks we would produce a California inspired southern Rhone style blend of Petite Sirah, Syrah and a dash of Zinfandel. Now known as Venant du Coeur (From the Heart) this very stylistic 2011 red blend debuted in fall 2014. The 2013 white counterpart Venant du Coeur Blanc was produced with fruit sourced from California's white Rhone varietal stronghold in Santa Barbara County.

We see a great future for both of the Venant du Coeur wines to grow in popularity alongside our highly regarded Cabernet Sauvignon Pulse.

“I used atypical Old World co-fermentation techniques with native yeasts to intermingle the aromatics and flavors of the three varietals in this blend.  Petite Sirah dominates the blend (46%) and was first to be harvested.  This was followed by Syrah (31%) a week later and added to the tank and kept cool awaiting the Zinfandel (23%) that followed a few days later. The 2012 Venant du Coeur expresses similarity in style and breed to its 2011 predecessor but with added layers of complexity and a deeper structure. Petite Sirah continues to contribute a deep purple hue so typical of the varietal along with masculine notes of blue and black fruits on the nose and palate. Syrah contributes its typical beacon fat character on the nose and a sense of elegance on the palate while Zinfandel adds its characteristic red berries, pepper and spice. The quality of the 2012 vintage is also expressed in the finely grained texture and generous mouthfeel together with a multi-layered and extremely long finish." — Rudy Zuidema, Winemaker

“When thinking about a white southern Rhone style blend to compliment our Venant du Coeur release my head and heart turned immediately to the Central Coast and Santa Barbara County in particular given its well earned reputation for these varietals. 2014 was an ideal vintage to bring out the dual qualities of varietal character and structure. In this vintage, Viognier dominates the blend (50%) both in aromatics and depth on the palate. This is complimented by the texture and flavor components of Grenache Blanc (30%) and Roussanne (20%) that seems to be the glue tying it all together. The floral and sweet pitted fruit character on the nose is a result of the increased proportion of Viognier and Roussanne in the blend and carries forward through the palate and on to the finish. All the while, Grenache Blanc offers its characteristic rich mouthfeel adding the perfect back drop to the luscious fruit balanced by good acidity lending a sense of unity and balance. The balance and structure of the mid-palate continue on the finish with notes of white pitted fruit, pear and a touch of citrus for added complexity." — Rudy Zuidema, Winemaker

“The growing season got off to a late start following a cooler than expected spring but continued beautifully through a mild summer that served to maximize flavor maturity with the balanced acidity and tannin development we look for in our wines. The bouquet of ripe blackberry is highlighted with cola and spice leading to a dense mid-palate showing current, kirsch black cherry and a hint of dusty Rutherford cedar with pencil lead minerality. The finish is layered, supple and long with a velvety texture and graceful mouthfeel.” — Rudy Zuidema, Winemaker

“The 2011 growing season in California's North Coast was challenging given cool temperatures and late season rainfall. But thanks to our historic vineyard location in Rutherford and the pristine farming protocols in place, along with hands on care in the winery, we were fortunate to escape many of the vintage's difficulties. The use of stabilizing tannins to hold color and rapid fermentation for maximum flavor extraction enabled us to achieve balance and complexity in the finished wine. Our 2011 Pulse is an elegant wine hearkening back to the style and seamless structure that brought Napa Valley Cabernets to the world stage - a worthy successor to our inaugural 2010 Pulse. The color is a deep ruby and the nose is explosive exhibiting deeply layered black fruits and cranberry. On the palate we see a focused wine with rich core black cherry, caramel and cedar leading to a complex finish carrying forward the flavors of the palate lingering together with smooth silky tannins. Structure, balance and finesse are the descriptors I use to describe the overall impression of this wine.” — Rudy Zuidema, Winemaker

Maximum allocation 12 bottles per customer

“2012 was a dream vintage in the Napa Valley with long warm days and cool evening temperatures to ensure optimal conditions for uniform ripening with ideal aromatic and flavor components. Our 2012 Pulse optimizes the vintage showing aromas of dried black cherries, currant, and sweet leather leading to a solid, rich middle core of black and red fruit tones. Concentrated mixed berries and rhubarb fill the palate complimented by a juicy and refreshing blend of earthy tannins, tobacco and currants lingering through a creamy seamless finish. Light shadings of chocolaty French oak tie these bold components together into a complex, powerful, but still approachable rendition of classic Cabernet Sauvignon from the highly regarded appellation of Rutherford.”  — Rudy Zuidema, Winemaker

“When thinking about a white southern Rhone style blend to compliment our Venant du Coeur release my head and heart turned immediately to the Central Coast and Santa Barbara County in particular given its well earned reputation for these varietals. 2013 was a rather warm vintage with little rain giving optimal ripeness for textured flavors and aromatics. Roughly half of the blend is Grenache Blanc with the remainder equally split between Roussane and Viognier. The nose has an exciting blend of dried rose petals, apricot nectar with a hint of malt and verbena. This is followed by the opulent mouthfeel so typical of the Grenache Blanc core and complemented by layers of white stone fruit, mango and melon with added notes of blood orange and pink grapefruit. The extremely long finish is a layered fusion of citrus, apple and honeyed pear that leaves you wanting for another glass.” — Rudy Zuidema, Winemaker
